| Director | | Veiko Ounpuu | Filmography 2006 Tühirand/Empty (short)
2007 Sügisball/Autumn Ball
Biography Before becoming a film director, he wrote socio-critical articles in the weekly Eesti Ekspress and was also a painter. His first short film, Empty, won the hearts of the Estonian critics as well as the cinema public with its uniqueness, derived from the balance between the quietly intelligent humor and sustained poetical form that is so particular to Veiko’s personal style. The themes and characters in his films are those of an essayist and the world around them is one created by a painter. Autumn Ball is his debut feature.

Autumn Ball / Veiko Ounpuu | How close can we get to other human beings? Is it possible to live a life completely devoid of love? Can someone, who has experienced what a fragile state of affairs shared happiness is, trust another again? Some chosen moments from the life of six people living in a huge sprawling conurbation of tower blocks built during the Soviet era. The gently stylized and indifferent world of Autumn Ball is steadily advancing towards winter and will not give any answers to these questions. What this world can demonstrate though is the possibility for laughter even there, where hope has long since become a sparse commodity.
