Biography He graduated from the China Central Academy of Drama in 1992. In 1997, he co-wrote Spicy Love Soup, which won two prestigious awards in China. He went on to write Shower (1999) and Sunflower (2005), each garnering numerous awards at film festivals in Toronto, San Sebastian, Rotterdam, etc. Shower won the Golden Alexander at the 40th TIFF. The Red Awn, which was also co-written by Cai, is his directorial debut.

The Red Awn / Cai Shangjun | Song Hai, a man in his 50s, returns to his hometown to reclaim his house and is told that he is officially dead – according to the local bureaucratic ministry. During Song’s five-year absence, his wife has died and his son Yongtao crossed him off the city registry. The rest of the film follows Song’s sincere efforts to resuscitate his fatherly image in his son’s mind. For Yongtao, understanding his father is also a process of growing up. Sometimes, time resolves human relationships.
