Biography
He was born in 1966 in Tondo, Manila. He started his career as a journalist in various print media companies. At the same time he was a labor activist in political grassroots organizations. After working as a reporter for several TV stations, he became the head of production for news and public affairs at ABC 5. As a broadcast journalist, he has made documentaries and reported on the war in Iraq, the political process in Afghanistan, as well as socio-cultural investigations on things uniquely Filipino. He is currently finishing his Master’s degree in Media Studies and Film at the University of the Philippines. Tribe –his Master’s thesis – is based on a screenplay that won the prestigious Palanca Award for Literature in 2006 and is his first feature film.

Tribe / Jim Libiran |  In Tondo, the darkest district of Manila, “tribes” of young gangsters roam the streets at night in search of quick fixes and dangerous thrills. World-weary Tondo throbs to the beats of hiphop and to the sensations of drugs, prostitution and violence. This crepuscular underworld is seen through the eyes of 10-year-old Ebet, who witnesses the events. Members of the Thugz Angels tribe chance upon the blood-soaked body of a neophyte of another gang, the Sacred Brown Tribe (SBT). Police arrest a Thugz Angels member for the murder. The SBT leaders vow to avenge their fallen member and learn that members of the Diablos gang are the killers. During the wake, SBT members forge a reluctant alliance with the Thugz Angels, and assemble to raid the Diablos’ lair...
