Biography
He was born in Datu Paglas, Mindanao island, Philippines and is recognized as the ideological father of the New Philippine Film Movement. He studied Cinematography at the Mowelfund Film Institute after studying economics. His films often tackle issues related to the current social and political state of the Philippines. He gained international acclaim through his Philippines Trilogy: Batang West Side, Evolution of a Filipino Family, and Heremias. His film Death in the Land of Encantos, the closing film of the Orizzonti Section of the Venice FF 2007, received a Special Mention.

Butterflies Have No Memories / Lav Diaz |  On an island far from the mainland of the Philippines, islanders who used to be wealthy are faced with economic difficulties when a goldmine company leaves the area. Ferding, Santos and Willy drown their despair in drink. One day, a Canadian woman’s visit changes everything... The film illustrates the contradictory nature of the prosperity development brings and the environmental destruction it causes, thus fully capturing the pain that Philippine society suffers.
