Godina’s father, Viktor Aćimović, was a valued member of the Skopje Kino Club and Karpo’s camera skills landed him a place at the Ljubljana Film School at an early age. But his un-harnessed filmmaking style brought him to the amateur film clubs all over Yugoslavia. Godina’s deliciously humorous and subversive work was axed on sight – quite literally, one of his films had to be destroyed with an axe because of his depiction of the Yugoslav army. Litany of Happy People, beautifully scored by the brothers Vranjesević, is a song-film about brotherhood in rural Vojvodina and, with its multi-ethnic make up, could have easily passed as a Yugoslav unity propaganda film. It was banned out of suspicion of hidden messages that the censors could not determine.
