Street Cinema

If you happen to be standing in a queue and you suddenly see a couple taken straight out of the 50s dancingmaniacally to the sound of swing; if you’re in a taxi and you see a pink Cadillacwith immobile pink vamps batting their eyelashes at you; if you’re walking past an apartment building and you notice that it’s been turned into amovie theater don’t be surprised. You’re in Thessaloniki and the FilmFestival has begun!

Wishing to re-examine the relationship between the Festival and the city, and the relationship between cinema and reality and the dream, we set as our goal this year to communicate the Festival in originalways that will transform the city itself into a movie theater. Our aim is to take cinema out onto the streets. Cinema everywhere. Cinema unexpectedly bursting into reality. Like a a flash of light, where you least expect it. Anywhere, at any moment, all over the city. Even in places where the Festival rarely reaches.

“For cinema to remain alive, it would have to invent everything from the start,” Renoir once said. In accordance with his words, that lie at the core of this year’s 50th edition, we extended an open invitation to the city’s artistic groups, asking them to be inspired by this year’s anniversary theme and to create cinema in the most surprising way, in the most unlikely places. Visual artists, performers, musicians, street artists and dancers will be “let loose” in the city of Thessaloniki one week before and especially during the Festival, creating an extraordinary cinematic map.
