Southwest / Eduardo Nunes

A girl dies in an inn while giving birth. A midwife/witch takes the baby to her cabin in the middle of a lake. A little girl escapes the cabin following a boy who has just discovered her. She reaches the shore, but has no words to communicate with the men who ask her where she comes from. She is led to the house of a family who has just lost her eldest daughter the previous night. It’s not easy to describe Eduardo Nunes’ black and white film. The unfolding events are not as important as the sounds, memories and senses that come together and create a mystical experience. Life’s cyclicality, the convergence of past, present and future, traumas, healing and love all become a braid of magical realism – wavy, flowing, ethereal, tender and rough at the same time. Like the girl’s black, long hair that winnow silky and salty in the wind.
