The Color of the Chameleon / Emil Christov

Batko, an intelligent and charming young man, is hired by the secret police as an informant in communist Bulgaria. A mistake gets him fired and Batko, confident that spying is his true vocation, hatches a cunning plan: he manipulates a group of angry young intellectuals to create his own, alternative network of spies, which he will later use to mess with the new regime. Meanwhile, he falls in love with a beautiful girl who dreams of defecting. It’s not only the absurdity of totalitarianism under the microscope here, but also the human potential for voyeurism and malice, as well as the tendency of rebels to turn into bloated autocrats when given power. The Color of the Chameleon, centered on Ruscen Vidinliev’s magnetic performance, is a brilliant, (very) dark comedy disguised as a spy thriller and slightly peppered with the tenderness of romantic love; it makes fun of serious things and takes its fun very seriously.
