Special Screenings

The Foster Boy / Markus Imboden

An orphan named Max dreams of a “real family” a dream which appears to come true when Max is contracted to work for the Bösiger family, who lives on a farm called Dunkelmatte. But instead of finding love and recognition, his foster parents treat him like a work animal, and their son Jakob is jealous of him and demeaning towards him. The only thing they can’t take away from him is playing the accordion. When a new teacher from the city recognizes his talent for music, Max gets the chance to perform in front of the entire community at the local festival. When the teacher takes a stand for Max, Max’s life at Dunkelmatte only gets worse. The only thing that maintains his will to survive is his friendship with Berteli, a girl who grew up in a small town nearby and is contracted to the Bösiger family when her mother, a widow, can no longer support her children. Max and Berteli dream about going to Argentina. Then brutality strikes again. Thanks to an unexpected ally, Max manages to escape and sets out to turn his dream of Argentina into reality, armed with his accordion and the conviction that things can only get better out there in the world.
