Whisky with Vodka / Andreas Dresen

Otto Kullberg, an actor with thirty years of cinema fame, is a man that women love and men like. Now and again, he has too much to drink. A film has failed because of it and the one he’s working on now – an affair between three people with a good start and a bad ending – is threatening to go the same way. A second actor is hired to replace Otto in case he takes to drinking too much. Telleck, the director, picks out Arno Runge, a little-known and younger theater actor. The scenes are shot twice, first with Otto and then with Arno. This leads to a serious but amusing competition taking place between them. Otto meets his old love Bettina again, who is his partner in the film and also the director’s wife. He realizes that she’s long lost to him and begins to eye, though skeptically, the beginner Heike. Not that he feels too old; it’s just that she is so young. He gets drunk with his rival Arno, who ends up completely smashed. Otto has played all kinds of lives. In the light of a sober day, he finds himself in his own world, alone and unneeded. The only thing he has left is the face that his audience still believes in.
