Biography
Cineuropa magazine characterized Zapas as “one of the most outstanding directors of contemporary auteur cinema,” while The Guardian referred to him as “one of the main protagonists of the burgeoning Greek new wave in cinema.” His first feature, Uncut Family (2004), screened at the 45th Thessaloniki IFF. His second feature film, The Last Porn Movie (2006), had its world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival and, following its Greek premiere at the Athens IFF, screened at the Kiev IFF, the Cyprus IFF, the Thessaloniki IFF and the Chennai IFF. Lars von Trier’s production company, Zentropa, co-produced his third feature film Minor Freedoms (2008). In February 2010, the Greek Film Archive presented a tribute to Costas Zapas’ “Family Trilogy”. His latest movie, The Rebellion of Red Maria (2010), had its world premiere at the Mar del Plata IFF and was described as “the most explosive vein of the brilliant new wave of Greek cinema.” His new, English-language film, Frankenstein: A Death Odyssey, based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, is currently in pre-production. The script was selected as one of the best European scripts by the Producers Lab Toronto 2011 at the Toronto IFF, in collaboration with the European Film Promotion and the Ontario Media Development Corporation.

Uncut Family / Costas Zapas

The life of a boy in his adolescence takes a turn when his relationship with his mother and father is exposed. Uncut Family focuses on a three-member family that is presented in its most sensitive and raw form, right at the point where its apparent stability collapses. On the pretext of revealing the relationship the young boy has with his mother and father, Zapas dares, in the five chapters of his film (The Son, The Father, The Mother, The Father and Son, The Holy Family), to focus on a case of intra-family sexuality which stands outside normal societal taboos.
