He spent his childhood between Rome and new York and went on to study at Wesleyan University. His films have screened at many film festivals, including Cannes, Venice and New York. His two short films, A Chjàna and A Ciambra received the Contracampo prize at the 68th Venice IFF and the Disocvery prize at Critics' Week at Cannes, a Nastro D'Argento Special Mention and the Jury Grand prize at the Miami IFF. Jonas was a resident at the Sundance Screenwriters & Directors Lab in 2012, and received the Global Sundance/Mahindra Prize. in 2012, Jonas was included in Filmmaker magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Cinema. Mediterranea had its premiere at the 2015 Cannes IFF.

Ayiva flees Burkina Faso, traverses the Mediterranean Sea, and reaches the South of Italy. His new life proves difficult, as he’s soon confronted with the hostility of the local community. However, Ayiva is determined: his life will be better over here, whatever the cost may be.
