SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT FUND FOR SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE 15-17 NOVEMBER, 2008

The Thessaloniki International Film Festival initiated in 2003 the Balkan Fund, a script development fund which addresses a geographical area not fully covered by any other festival fund: the Balkans or South-Eastern Europe, specifically Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, FYROM, Greece, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey. The Festival of the historically multicultural Thessaloniki supports filmmakers from this region in their efforts to develop their projects as professionally as possible.

The Balkan Fund continues its successful course for the sixth consecutive year having to display an impressive amount of films that have been developed and completed with the Fund’s support:

• Snow, Grand Prize Critics’ Week, Cannes IFF 2008
• California Dreamin’ (endless), Un Certain Regard Award, Cannes IFF 2007
• Grbavica (Esma’s Secret), Golden Bear, Berlin IFF 2006
• Gucha - Distant Trumpet, Berlin IFF-Panorama 2007
• Hidden Faces, World Premiere at Thessaloniki International Film Festival, 2007
• The Tuning, Main Prize at the Mannheim Film Festival & Best Feature Film Award, Napoli Film Festival 2005.

This year’s Thessaloniki International Film Festival will host four Balkan Fund films: Small Crime (awarded in 2003), Snow (awarded in 2004), Farewell to Hemingway (also
awarded in 2004 and an International Premiere in Thessaloniki) and The Tour (participated in 2007).

Most recently completed film: Here & There, written and directed by Serbian Darko Lungulov starring Mirjana Karanovic and Cindy Lauper.

THE BALKAN FUND JURY 2008

The Balkan Fund is once again breaking new ground as the jury will be consisted this year mostly by screenwriters and/or directors, which is rather unusual in juries at the development stage.

Richard Kwietniowski, screenwriter-director (Poland/UK) The director of Love and Death in Long Island and writer and director of Owning Mahowny also regularly teaches directing at British film schools and has contributed to many European screenwriting initiatives, including Scenario at London’s Institut Francais, ScriptEast in Poland and FadeIn in Hungary. He has also written and directed numerous shorts.

Milcho Manchevski, screenwriter-director (FYROM) The writer and director of Before the Rain, Shadows and Dust has seen his films screened at more than a hundred festivals and distributed in close to 50 countries. They are part of the curriculum at numerous universities worldwide, and have been discussed at a number of academic conferences. He has also directed for American TV, authored a fiction book, essays and op-ed pieces, a book of photographs and has staged art performances.

Simon Perry, producer and Chief executive of the Irish Film Board (Ireland) Producer of films such as Another Time, Another Place, 1983 and Nineteen Eighty-Four Simon Perry was Chief Executive of British Screen Finance for nearly ten years supporting films such as The Crying Game, Orlando, Naked, Land And Freedom and Bend It Like Beckham. In January 2006 Perry was appointed Chief Executive of the Irish Film Board, based in Galway and Dublin. Films supported by the IFB under Perry’s leadership so far include Once, Kings and Garage.

Razvan Radulescu, screenwriter (Romania) Razvan Radulescu’s long screenwriting credits include films such as Stuff and Dough, Niki and Flo and The Death of Mr. Lazarescu. He is currently shooting his first feature film as director with Melissa de Raaf, First of All, Felicia (a Balkan Fund project). He was a script consultant for the film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and has also published many books and essays.

Christina Kallas, screenwriter-producer (Greece/Germany) Her credits include the feature films Love Lies, i.d., The Commissioner, the TV movies Maenner sind wie and Holland (in production) and the TV series Edel & Starck and Danny Lowinski (in production). She is the president of the Federation of Screenwriters in Europe (FSE), artistic director of the Balkan Fund, senior lecturer at the Cinema Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, chair of commission for the financing of script development and a member of the commission for the financing of film production at the German Federal Film Board FFA. She has written five books, two of them to be published shortly.
