The 50th anniversary of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival continues this year’s edition of the Salonica Studio educational initiative for university students specializing in writing and film directing/production, which was inaugurated in 2006. Since 2008, Salonica Studio is part of the Four Corners new initial training scheme, supported by the MEDIA Program of the European Union. Thessaloniki International Film Festival in collaboration with the Film School of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University was one of the founding members of Four Corners in partnership with Spain and the UK. Each of the founding members is represented by an academic or professional institution, whereas this year’s partnership was extended with a new member, the National Academy for Theatre & Film Arts, Bulgaria.
Four Corners brings together students and graduates from around Europe and helps them to develop, to finance and to produce first feature films that will thrive and prosper in the European and international market place. 12 project teams attend seminars on international funding and sales, special screenings and many of the Festival’s developmental activities related to their career objectives.
The Film Studies Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s Faculty of Fine Arts participates in this initiative in a number of ways: 2 selected groups of students in writing, directing and film production take part in the Four Corners training scheme workshops through the year, the university’s students are welcome to attend Salonica Studio’s open sessions and, finally, the Greek students will act as hosts/liaisons between their foreign olleagues and the Festival, as well as the city of Thessaloniki. Salonica Studio and Four Corners have added European and Mediterranean dimension to the Festival’s training and educational framework, while at the same time it has reinforced the creative two-way relationship between the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and the Film Studies Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which has been developing since 2005 through the expansion of Masterlasses and Open Discussions.
This year’s tutors are: Svend Abrahamsen, Phil Hughes, Miguel Machalski and Ana Sanz-Magallon. Salonica Studio will be the 4th workshop of the Four Corners program with 33 participants attending from 8 different countries (Greece, Spain, UK, Germany, Estonia, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria).
The Greek workshop will take place in the Agora as part of the 50th anniversary Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
