Looking behind the Images
Photographs and writings from America

In 1988, DEFA studio filmmaker Rainer Simon made The Ascent of Chimborazo, about Alexander von Humboldt. That was the first time he came in contact with South America. Since then, the continent and its people have had a strong hold on him. After the fall of the Berlin wall, Simon travels to Ecuador every year to visit friends. Gradually, his range of action has extended to include the entire continent. He screens films, attends film festivals and holds workshops from Mexico and Bolivia to Guatemala and Chile, and even as far north as the US and Canada. The artistic “spoils” of these journeys are thousands of photographs and accompanying writings. “when I take photographs, I’m obsessed with wanting to hold on to that moment in life, but I know that’s not possible. However, a memory that touches me remains for years. Looking behind the images means being able to compare; looking into the mirror of your soul and discovering your inner world.” Rainer Simon

Films by Rainer Simon
Together with Konrad wolf and Frank Beyer, Rainer Simon is one of the leading film directors of the DEFA studio. He was the only director from East Germany who won the Golden Bear in west Berlin (The Woman and the Stranger). His films always came close to the limits imposed by East German censorship, of which Rainer was often a victim. During the Thessaloniki IFF, the Goethe-Institut will be screening three of his masterpieces.
