Twilight Portrait / Angelina Nikonova
The day that has just begun for unsuspecting Marina will gradually evolve into a nightmare. When she is left alone by her lover in a dangerous, remote Moscow neighborhood, she sets off to go home on foot. For starters, one of her heels breaks. As she sits down in a café to rest, she finds herself up against an inexplicably hostile behavior by the sour waitress. While trying to hitchhike, her purse gets stolen. And a little while later, she is raped by three police officers. The elegant, well-to-do Marina won’t allow her image to be rumpled, so she returns to her husband and life as if nothing had happened. Through Marina’s story, Angelina Nikonova lashes out an unflinching critique at Russian society, at the hypocrisy of her fellow citizens and the rigidity of the public system, focusing especially on police corruption. She creates an atmosphere worthy of a thriller, and reinforces it with a narrative that constantly subverts expectations. Twilight Portrait is a shocking film, not because it intends to provoke, but because it dares to dig in and poke at the depths of human nature.
