Dog Days / Ulrich Seidl

It’s a stifling hot weekend in the suburbs south of Vienna in the no-man’s-land between the highway feeder roads, supermarkets, and new housing estates. During these dog days*, the mercury rises, and so do tempers. Six stories unfold, united in time and space, in their everyday routine and aggression. Nights are steeped in songs and games, in sex and violence. Days are marked by loneliness, the loss of love, and the longing for love. This is life at its most vulnerable and intimate. *Dog Days (Latin: Canicula) refers to the hottest time of summer, July 24-August 23. The name comes from Canis Major (Orion’s dog), the constellation most present in the sky at this time.
