Born in Casablanca in 1970, she lives between Paris and Tangier. She started making documentaries in 2000 with two noteworthy films (Tangiers, Our Forbidden Places), before going on to direct On the Edge, her first fiction feature, which was selected for the “Director’s Fortnight” at the 2011 Cannes IFF.
On the Edge / Leïla Kilani
In the old town of Tangiers, two young Casablancan girls – Badia and Imane – live their lives among the army of workers who inhabit the city. Peeling shrimps by day in a spotless factory, then turning tricks by night, the girls make extra money by fencing meager goods stolen from their nighttime customers. Beyond Tangiers lies the “Free Zone”, a symbol for global sub-contracting, accessible only to those with a work permit. It is Europe on Moroccan land, something that Badia sees as a springboard into a more material world.
